Project Managers vs Project Administrators

Project Managers are individuals in charge of specific projects within an organisation. They are skilled at getting the best out of the people and projects that they oversee. The typical functions of a Project Manager are to plan, budget, oversee, and document all aspects of the specific project being worked on.

Project administration is the key to achieving success and maintaining control on any project. The Project Administrator contributes essential administrative support to the project team under the direction of a Project Manager. Typical duties of a Project administrator include all aspects of facilitating a project, convening meetings, collecting project information, taking meeting minutes, assisting with the developing of reports and presentations, and arranging training for project staff. In addition, the project Administrator participates in budget administration, keeping records, and assisting with forecasting project performance. Project Administrators can, and often do, advance into a Project Manager role.

Assessment and Award

Academy of York is a recognized Education and Training Provider (RETP) with Project Management South Africa (PMSA). PMSA is the SAQA recognized professional body conferring designations in multi-industry project management. This means that Academy of York’s PM-related course offerings and the requirements for progression along the PMSA framework for careers in project management and professional designations, are in alignment. This course will be assessed through four comprehensive assignments.

Upon successful completion, you will receive an Academy of York certificate.

Course outline

This comprehensive course in project management consists of three modules creating a path which leads to an Academy of York certificate as a Project Manager or Project Administrator. Two of the three modules (Communications and Project Management Fundamentals) are common to both paths and must be completed first before choosing the Project Manager or Project Administrator end-goal. It is important to note that Project Manager and Project Administrator are two distinct career paths each focusing on a specific and necessary area of project management. At the end of Module 2, the learner is required to make a choice between Project Manager (Module 3a) or the Project Administration (Module 3b). Please note that it is possible to cross over between the two modules on payment of an additional fee.
