Course Description:

Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Officers monitor compliance with health and safety systems and processes in an organisation. They identify hazards and assess risks to health and safety and recommend the implementation of appropriate health and safety controls where required. This programme provides students with the critical skills and knowledge necessary for success in health and safety roles. The combination of theory, practical application and work experience ensures students can effectively manage health and safety issues across various industries. Possible career pathways include Health and Safety Officer, Safety Coordinator, Risk Manager, Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, Safety Consultant or Emergency Response Coordinator.

An appropriate NQF Level 3 qualification (Grade 11)
Assessments
Students will complete an assignment for each of the knowledge and practical modules. For work experience modules students are required to submit the completed Statement of Work Experience with any additional evidence required. Students who have successfully completed the knowledge, practical and work experience requirement of the qualification will be issued with a statement of results which provides entry to the final examination. The final examination or External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) is conducted at an approved assessment centre (please note that additional examination fees apply).
Work Experience
The completion of work experience is a compulsory part of the programme. Students are required to spend time in an approved workplace (approximately 36 days) completing the tasks prescribed in the Statement of Work Experience. Such work may be undertaken on a part-time/ informal basis.
Awards
Students who have successfully completed the EISA will be awarded the National Occupational Certificate: Occupational Health and Safety Officer (SAQA ID No 121929, NQF 4, 120 credits), issued by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).
